Chinese police have uncovered a major flight delay and cancellation insurance scam, Oddity Central reports.

A 45-year-old woman from Nanjing, known only as Li, masterminded a scheme that illegally earned her 3 million yuan ($423,000) from 2015 to 2019. She bought plane tickets and paid insurance in case they were canceled or delayed. And when flights were actually delayed or cancelled, she received compensation.

As the investigation found, over 4 years, Lee filed almost 900 lawsuits. Before purchasing each ticket, the woman conducted a whole investigation. She pored over weather forecasts, passenger reviews of airlines and previous cancellations and delays to pinpoint unlucky flights. Her experience working in a travel company helped her.
Lee is currently under arrest and investigation is ongoing. Chinese media note that the illegal scheme helped insurance companies identify loopholes for scammers.
