Even MacAskill, a former Guardian staffer, met Edward Snowden in Hong Kong 10 years ago. He gave an interview about how journalists published only 1% of the Snowden archive, which is stored in The New York Times.

MacAskill explained that the data is not being released due to waning public interest, possible implications for Snowden and its historical value. He acknowledged that journalists could have done a better job of uncovering the threat of mass surveillance, but that they had achieved Snowden's goal of warning the world.

MacAskill left The Guardian in 2018 and does not know whether The Guardian and The New York Times discussed the Snowden archive. He believes that the Snowden case has become a test for journalism and society.
