The first 6-digit card number is known as the BIN number. BIN stands for Bank Identification Number. This is a 6-digit code that identifies the financial institution that issued the Card to the cardholder. It is also referred to as IIN (Issuer Identification Number). The BIN can be used to identify the issuing financial institution of a credit card, debit card, prepaid card, and rewards card.

Credit and debit card number format

According to ISO/IEC 7812, credit and debit card numbers can be up to 19 digits long

PQQQQRRRRRRRRRRRS

P - Primary Industry Identifier

Q - assigning a financial institution identifier

R - account identifier up to 12 digits

S - Checksum to confirm the card number.

Where PQQQQQ are combined as a BIN number or IIN code.
